Program Information

Chicago HOPES provides one-on-one shelter based tutoring and enrichment activities to students in homeless shelters.

Our sessions are dedicated to reading, writing, and math development, while also exposing our students to artistic and enrichment activities that cultivate curiosity and promote self-sufficiency.

Fall and Spring Program Information

Fall Program: September 28th thorugh December 3rd

Spring Program: January 11th through June 4th

During the school year, Chicago HOPES meets two to three times a week after school and/or on Sunday nights. All sessions last for an hour and a half to two hours, though meeting days and times are shelter specific.

School year sessions are dedicated to our core values: literacy, math, and independent learning skills, as well as homework help and personal enrichment. Individualized lesson plans are provided by on-site teachers to guide tutors in their efforts to help students achieve their full academic potential. Every other week students have the opportunity to participate in an enrichment activity provided by one of Chicago HOPES' many partnering programs.

Summer Program Information

Summer Program: June 21st through August 13th

During the summer, Chicago HOPES meets three times a week, Monday through Wednesday, for two hours each session.

Summer sessions continue the Chicago HOPES dedication to core academic values, along with an emphasis on community engagement. Enrichment programs continue on a bi-monthly basis and are alternated with weekly themed lessons by our on-site teachers.

On alternating Fridays, students have the opportunity to attend a field trip that relates to the work they are doing within their sessions, and their community. Past trips have included The Lincoln Park Zoo, The Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, and The MLK Family Fun Center.

Enrichment

Every two weeks an entire session is devoted to a group activity related to the specific site's enrichment theme. Chicago HOPES invites a special guest from a local organization to lead the students in a shelter-based project. Our students are engaged in activities such as art projects, dance/music/theatrical performances, or discussions about their community and self. Some of our past guests have included the Hyde Park Arts Center, The Association of Black Storytellers, and Growing Power. Our hope is to encourage our students to acheive their full potential, while expanding their horizon of knowledge.
