On Oct. 2 at Lena Washington Food and Shelter in North Lawndale, one of our HOPES tutoring sites, we held a festival to celebrate the planting of several fall crops at the shelter. As part of the Grow Hopes garden program which began last summer, we consolidated our planting beds at Lena Washington. With volunteers, students, residents, and community members on hand, we enjoyed face painting, pumpkin painting, and of course, the planting of healthy food that residents will help tend and maintain. To celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the National Day of Service, we held two activity days. At Ubuntu, under the leadership of Columbia College art ed students, students painted murals on two walls of the tutoring room. At Lena Washington we partnered with VISTAs from the Chicago Area Project to lead a number of art and MLK-oriented projects.

What have we been up to this spring? ... Radio interviews with bands who participated in Bright Lights for Bright Kids III, enrichment activities, tutoring, anti-bullying workshops, cupcakes from Swirlz, and partnering with the Jack and Jill of America Foundation to provide mother's day gifts to some shelter moms.
