On Oct. 2 at Lena Washington Food and Shelter in North Lawndale, one of our HOPES tutoring sites, we held a festival to celebrate the planting of several fall crops at the shelter. As part of the Grow Hopes garden program which began last summer, we consolidated our planting beds at Lena Washington. With volunteers, students, residents, and community members on hand, we enjoyed face painting, pumpkin painting, and of course, the planting of healthy food that residents will help tend and maintain.
